Those of us who have the misfortune to be trapped in the northern hemisphere (and the northeastern United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>) as January draws to a close have been treated to a mix of weather that would have a laughing hyena depressed: slush and rain and wind and cold have us wishing for summer.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Fortunately for 14 fillies, however, one man\u2019s trash is another man\u2019s treasure, and January in New South Wales means summer, beaches, and \u201cSexy Muffins\u201d in the G1 Sexy Muffins Classic, run over one mile of firm turf for fillies four years and older.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>They\u2019ll be looking for the lion\u2019s share of a $500,000 purse, and divisional leader Jolie\u2019s Song has been tabbed a slight 5\/1 choice, but she won\u2019t have it easy: let\u2019s take a look at the field.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>

Ranked #1 in the division, Jolie\u2019s Song may be the most unorthodox division leader in the game at the moment: she hasn\u2019t faced her own gender since competing in this race last year (53 weeks and 12 starts), nor has she won a race since the G2 Buddy Boy Mile, which means that it has been 50 weeks since her last win, and she comes in with an 11 race losing streak<\/I>.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>Why is she the morning line favorite, and even more confusingly, why aren\u2019t I suggesting that the oddsmaker may be experimenting with judgment-distorting crack cocaine?\u00a0 <\/SPAN>First of all, this one\u2019s speed figures put her right at the top of the group, and she\u2019s placed in G1 races against the boys several times; its hard to knock a mare with that kind of ability.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>All the same, she hasn\u2019t finished better than 9th<\/SUP> in any of her four most recent races, and her speed figures in those four races averages a 98.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>She\u2019ll need a quick turnaround and she\u2019ll need to hope that returning to her own division can help her regain her form, but she\u2019s classy enough to make it a realistic possibility.\u00a0 <\/SPAN>That said, the fact that the oddsmaker may be justified in setting the odds as he did does not mean that this mare is a solid play at 5\/1: she\u2019s vulnerable even while seemingly dropping in class.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/SPAN><\/o:p><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/P><\/TD><\/TR>
