After a nasty week of weather, it has cleared and the track has dried enough to make it up to good for this 11 furlong contest on the dirt. The purse is $125,000. This year is the sixth running of this important race on Sweden’s schedule. Some of the top mares still active have run, and lost, this race, such as Estrogen, Galloping Ghost, and Krishna(Ire). One such mare is back this year after finishing second two years ago in an attempt to finally add this race to her resume.

Leading the post parade is one of the top fillies from last year’s crop of 3yos, Donner. The daughter of Thunder Gulch is currently ranked 5th in the older female long dirt division. Sam812218 trained this girl to three G1 wins last season, along with a G2, a G3, and an appearance in the Breeder’s Bowl. Her top speed of 108 was run winning the G1 Chestnut at today’s distance, and she won the G1 G.S.R. Oaks on a good track. She is today’s favorite at 7/2.

In post two is Cry Rogue, a 5yo daughter of Cryptoclearance. Going off at 28/1 for trainer scottsvill, she has been lightly raced, only making sixteen starts in her career. She has done pretty well for herself in the allowance ranks, and is stakes placed, having finished third in the Black Buck Dancer Challenge at 13f in her first start last year. The competition may prove too much for her here, but she does have a decent jockey and won her only start on an off track.

In post three at 8/1 is Sophocles II, owned by network7. She is a 6yo by Stravinsky, and has appeared in two races named after mares I used to own. Ok, so that’s no claim to fame, but she also is a graded winner, having won the G3 Shuvee Sweepstakes as a 4yo. She was graded placed last year, and in her prime she blasted out runs of 118 and 115 over 12f and 13f respectively. Now THAT is something to brag about. Unfortunately, her jockey isn’t. Don’t take her lightly, though, a mare with that kind of history can always come up with one more career race when you least expect it.

In post four at 10/1 is slammin‘s Violent Storm. A 6yo, she is the only graded placed offspring produced by Illinois Storm. Winner of nine stakes in her career, last time out she proved that even after 50+ races, she’s still got game, finishing third in the G1 Ruffian Cup on DelPen Champions Day to earn that graded placed title. Her most impressive victory came right here in Sweden, when she won the 11f Styway Special as a 3yo by an astonishing 12-3/4 lengths. That won’t happen again today, but she does seem to like this track, recording two wins, two seconds, and one third in her five starts here.

Does anyone need an introduction to Xtremely Awesome? The 4yo Awesome Again filly purchased by n2racing in the ejdstable dispersal made a triumphant return to the track three weeks ago in Finland, taking the Sunair Storm Memorial by 3/4 length. The G1 placed filly equalled her best speed figure in that race, and is looking quite good in her workouts as she prepares to begin her 4yo season. She goes off at 11/1, and is making her first start on an off track. Awesome Again’s runners don’t seem to have any major difficulty on good surfaces, though, so I doubt it will be an issue.

In post six at 12/1 is Seeking Buda. Perhaps lacostra should have named her Seeking Slop. This 4yo Seeking The Gold filly IS an off track specialist. In fifteen career starts, a whopping ten of them have been on an off track. The question mark on this filly is, instead, the 11f distance. She tried 10f in her last start, and it didn’t go so well. That doesn’t mean she can’t do it, something may have happened in that race. She may be hoping the off track is an advantage, but so many of the horses here have off track experience, that it is likely only to not hurt her, rather than to help her. She does have the ability to run speed figures that can put her right in the thick of this.

In post seven is Mambomambomambo at 8/1. A 5yo by Kingmambo, she is equally at home on either surface. She has won stakes on both surfaces, and is graded placed on turf. She is coming off a 3rd place finish in the G3 Eloquent Lady Handicap on yielding turf, so she also can handle off tracks. She has only failed to hit the board three times in 18 career starts. Two times in the past, when running on dirt following a turf race, she has recorded a victory, including running her top speed figure of 107 at 10f in a dirt allowance. The turf to dirt angle could serve her well again, and she may find herself graded placed on both surfaces at the end of the day.

In post eight at 5/1 is tisjuliet‘s Daylight Dreamer(Ire). Are you looking for a horse with up front speed to take the lead in this race? Look no further than this 6yo daughter of Giant’s Causeway(Ire). Once she moved away from sprints and got into longer distances, she has found few horses who could prevent her from running up front. The style has served her well, and she won three stakes in a row last year at this distance, along with a couple at 10.5f…one on a sloppy track. With no other real speedsters here, she will try to take this gate to wire.

In post nine at 7/1 is N. Portman. The 6yo daughter of Sadler’s Wells ran second in this very race two years ago. Since then she has won five stakes at distances of 11 to 13 furlongs, and has achieved a ranking of #18 in the older females long dirt division. She is working on a three race win streak, but hasn’t run since mid-October, and has chosen this as the place to make her 6yo debut. She is still looking for that graded win, but has proven she likes this race and would like nothing better than to add win number four to her streak here.

In post ten is Barb’s Petit Marron, a 4yo by Green Desert. Currently owned by super14, she won a string of starter allowances before moving up to the allowance level, where she proved that she did not belong in the claiming or starter ranks. She placed third in her only non-owner restricted stakes, and has been improving quite nicely as she has matured. She is undefeated in four starts on an off track, and goes off today at odds of 11/1.

In post eleven at 10/1 is Chopping Hill. She is a 4yo by Woodman and is owned by meguire5th. She won the G2 King Classic at 9.5 furlongs in Germany last year against older fillies and mares, pulling off a wild upset as the longest shot in the field. It was a huge effort, but she certainly has the back class to pull off such a feat again, particularly since she is gaining maturity and learning to settle down and concentrate on the task at hand.

Rounding out the field is the old lady of the race, the 7yo Winged Victory. A daughter of Deputy Minister, she earned her first stakes victory two races ago, wiring a field in a 14 furlong marathon on a good track. All but one of her wins came last year, as she raced only four times between her 3yo and 5yo seasons. Likely to retire before this year is over, owner mrfu is looking to get a few more stakes placings on her resume before she heads to the breeding shed. She has one win and one second in two trips over an off track.

This should be quite a competitive field, with the off surface likely playing little to no part in the outcome. The highly-ranked Donner certainly looks the one to beat, but several others look very good here. Daylight Dreamer(Ire) may go all the way if no one challenges her, Mambomambomambo has the turf to dirt angle that could work in her favor, and don’t count out N. Portman with her history here in this race, or Violent Storm with her affinity for this track. Good luck to all the runners, and may they all come home sound.

[2

post-1477","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
