Welcome to Ireland for this week’s race, The Erica En La Sea Cap. We’ll be featuring 3yo dirt sprinters this time, going six furlongs for a purse of $75,000. Nine sophomores will be running today, ranging from those making their stakes debuts to one who is graded placed. Let’s take a look at the field.

On the rail is Wizard Hollandia at 9/2. He is a son of Bachelor Duke out of the Danzig mare Boston Lactose. Hey, I used to own her! Nice to see she’s done well as a broodmare. Wiz hasn’t won a stakes yet, but he has hit the board in four of the six he has appeared in. A. Reed certainly gives him a chance to do so again here.

In post two at 11/1 is Warwas. He is a son of Thunder Rumble out of a Wayne County(Ire) mare. He has won two allowances, but hasn’t had much luck in stakes competition, although he did see a nice increase in his speed figure last time out. B. McCormick is in the saddle for his first stakes appearance of the year.

In post three at 9/2 is Ireland’s own Doctor Speights. I wonder if he ever feels strange being the only horse in the stable without a tag? He is by Pleasantly Perfect and is the second stakeswinner in as many foals for the graded placed Forty Niner mare Doctor Jo Ann. He ran a very nice 87 speed figure in winning the Project Soar Challenge in Athens. Naturally, D. Nickesy will be guiding him today.

In post four at 7/1 is Koufos Lake. He is by Meadowlake out of a Partner’s Hero mare. He has also run an 87, last time out while winning the Bruise A.P. Stakes in Spain on a sloppy track. Wondering if he was named for a real lake, I googled him, and got a BTB article. Of course, once I clicked on his ID, I realized he is named for his dam Koufos. D. Knopf is riding.

Today’s favourite is Super Tornado at 5/2. As with any of the super horses, he is very well bred, by A.P. Indy out of the multiple graded winning millionairess Vegas Vixen, a daughter of Danzig. He had a very good start to his career, winning two stakes and placing in a third before stepping up to the highest level. He seems to have not been quite ready, though, and returns here to a level he has proven himself at. Last year’s top jockey Z. Kentucky is his rider.

In post six is NCAA Champs at 11/1. He is by Victory Speech out of a Foolish Pleasure mare. He has placed in two stakes, one on each surface, but Mizzi Russell will have to figure out how to get him to rate if he wants to do well here, as he likely will not be able to get out front faster than Super Tornado. Then again, he did run his best speed figure when he got into a speed duel in a stakes race in Hong Kong.

In post seven is the graded placed Wonder Lawn at 4/1. He is by Fort Wood out of a Roy mare. I’ve always wondered why Fort Wood doesn’t have a SAF tag. This boy has lived up to his name, running second in the G3 Bad Deal Stakes and running a very nice 88 while winning the Bearly With Zack Stakes in Victoria. He wheels back from a subpar effort last week to make his dirt debut here. With E C Doyle up, I like his chances here if he takes to the surface switch.

In post eight at 7/1 is Moment Of Silence. He is by Lion Heart based on the stakeswinning Sunday Silence horse Sunday Special. He ships in from New Mexico, where he wired an allowance field while posting an 81 speed figure. This is his stakes debut, and he’s drawn a tough field and a so so jockey in R. Inch, but he’s been training here for a few weeks now and should be ready to give it his best shot.

Rounding out the field is another local horse, Cooking With Gas(NZ), at 41/1. He is by Fanatic Dane(NZ) out of a Ransom Calling mare. He is the first winner out of three sim runners for Fanatic Dane(NZ), having broken his maiden two starts ago in a tough full field in Athens. The horse that finished second to him has never finished worse than second in five starts, so this youngster does have some ability lurking within and can rise to the occasion given a good trip.

Well, this certainly looks like yet another exciting matchup for Ireland racegoers. We have some proven winners, a colt making a surface switch, a couple of lightly raced colts who could show a leap in their performance at a moment’s notice and much more. Good luck to all the runners and may they all come home sound.
