Welcome to Kentucky, and the beginning of the sophomore campaign for these young fillies. Today’s race is the Sky Beauty AHndicap, a G1 race over six furlongs on the dirt course for a purse of a cool half a million dollars. If you haven’t heard of Thnxmsslew<\/b> you must have been hiding under a rock for the last six months. But the number one ranked sprinting filly is not without challengers today, as the number two sprinter Crabby Patties<\/b> is here, as well as the lightly-raced superfilly-to-be Peace Blossom<\/b>. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of her…she’ll be a household name in no time, and may become Thnxmsslew’s biggest rival. But this is not even a three horse race, as several others in here look pretty darn good too. Let’s have a look at the field.<\/br><\/br>Leading the post parade is zooom<\/i>‘s Fooshi Koochi<\/b> at 12\/1. A true blueblood (Fusaichi Pegasus x Danzig) she has only four starts so far, winning her maiden and an allowance with ease before attempting stakes competition. She has a third and a fourth to show for her stakes efforts, but has lost by less than two lengths each time.<\/br><\/br>In post two at 11\/1 is Seekers Keepers<\/b>, owned by scout3<\/i>. Another filly with exquisite breeding (Seeking The Gold x Danehill), she has five starts on her resume. She is stakes placed on both turf and dirt, and nearly became a stakewinner in Germany but was beaten by a quarter length. <\/br><\/br>In post three at 10\/1 is one of my favourite fillies, Deseeker<\/b>, owned by rockriver2<\/i>. I also own a stakeswinning Dehere x Seeking The Gold filly, thus my admiration for this young lady. She has two stakes wins to her credit, as well as hitting the board in three others, and had not been off the board until her last race, in which she failed to get the early lead. She ran a 92 in the race before that.<\/br><\/br>Certain Quality<\/b> is the first stakeswinner out of nine sim runners for Storm Cat son Certain Storm. She is out of an Elusive Quality mare and is owned by burn3downs<\/i>. She won her debut and went straight to stakes, where she hit the board. She has shown steady improvement and now has two stakes wins to her credit. Her odds today are 16\/1.<\/br><\/br>A victory in the G1 Getaway Stakes catapulted Crabby Patties<\/b> near the top of the filly sprint division. She is the first graded winner for Pikepass, and is out of the stakes placed Danehill mare Pooped Out. Currently ranked #2, she also has won two open stakes and an allowance, and ran second in another stakes. She is owned by inzamam4<\/i>, and despite her ranking, goes off at 10\/1.<\/br><\/br>In post six also at 10\/1 is Western Song<\/b>, owned by stoners<\/i>. She is by Unbridled’s Song out of the stakeswinning Gone West mare Southern Lynn. She has won five of her eight starts, finishing fourth in the others. Three of her wins were in stakes races, all at seven furlongs.<\/br><\/br>In post seven is Elusive Infinity<\/b>, stablemate of top turf sprinter Otto O. She is by Elusive Quality out of a Danehill mare, and is owned by 2die4<\/i>. She has won one stakes and placed in two others, including one on turf. She goes off at 11\/1.<\/br><\/br>In post eight at 18\/1 is The Blue Sword(GB)<\/b>, owned by aalusive<\/i>. The daughter of Diesis(GB) is the second stakeswinner out of as many foals for the Forty Niner mare Niner Niner. She hit the ground running, winning her first four starts including two stakes, then running third in two graded races, before faltering in the Breeder’s Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly. She switched surfaces last time out, scoring a stakes victory in her first race on dirt. <\/br><\/br>In post nine is Broken Nail<\/b> at 18\/1. She is owned by shall<\/i> and is by A.P. Indy. She is the second stakeswinner out of as many foals out of the Forty Niner mare Grossly Scat. She also ran second in another stakes, in which she ran her best speed figure to date.<\/br><\/br>In post ten is whoami1<\/i>‘s Powered By Azroc<\/b>. She is by Pulpit and based on the Deputy Minister horse Light Snatch (man, I wish I’d had enough points to breed him when I owned him). In just two starts, she is already stakesplaced, running a tough second to a graded placed colt last time out. Her odds are 17\/1.<\/br><\/br>In post eleven at 7\/1 is Bourbon Alley<\/b>, owned by blackswan<\/i>. A daughter of Dixieland Band out of a Damascus mare, she ran third in the G1 Dangerous Reward Handicap on DelPenn Champions Day. She has an open stakes win and an allowance win also. She is one of four fillies in the race who have broken 90, running a 90 in her stakes win and a 93 in the G1.<\/br><\/br>Co-favourite at 5\/1, Peace Blossom<\/b> has crashed straight in to the top ranks of filly sprinters in just four career starts. The daughter of Speightstown out of a Danzig mare, she is already ranked #11 in the divison. She won her first three starts, spewing out speed figures of 93 and 92 on the way to victories in an allowance and an open stakes. She ran another 93 last time out in the G1 Ms Slew Handicap, but was unable to hold off Thnxmsslew in the stretch. She is owned by darkfall<\/i>.<\/br><\/br>The #1 ranked dirt sprint filly is, of course, Thnxmsslew<\/b>. She is by Forty Niner and out of the multiple-graded winning Seattle Slew mare Ms Slew. She is a candidate for an Eclipse Award as the 2 Year Old Filly Of The Year. She has won the G1 Hoserhead Juvenile Fillies, the G1 Ms Slew Handicap, and the G2 Stoker Handicap. The 96 she ran in the Ms Slew last time out is the top speed figure of any of today’s runners. Her odds are 5\/1 and she is owned by polandfarm<\/i>.<\/br><\/br>Rounding out the field is cobrakai<\/i>‘s I’ve Got Soul<\/b>. She is by Vindication out of a Forestry mare. It took her a couple of starts to get going, but she has won three in a row now out of her five career starts, including a stakes race last time out. Her odds are 13\/1.<\/br><\/br>Thnxmsslew is certainly the most accomplished filly here, but she isn’t a shoo in. Besides the other fillies that have run over 90, any of the others could be capable of having a breakout race here. The order of finish is really anyone’s guess, especially since so much in these early three year old races depends on who gets the early lead and who figures out how to rate when they don’t. One thing is for sure, though, the competition will be very good and definitely worth watching!
