This is for 3yo and older females, run at 6.5 furlongs on a yielding course for a purse of $75,000. We have everything from a top-ten older sprinter to a 3yo making her first start against older fillies and mares. Four, count’em, yes 4 of these gals are going off at 9/2 (that’s half the field!), with only one having better odds than those.

The headliner today is Lee C Us, the #7 ranked older female turf sprinter. A 4yo daughter of Lycius, she has won more than a few open stakes, and has hit the board in a fair number of graded stakes. Most of those graded runs were within her last few races, although she has been graded-placed since her fourth career start. She’s run as fast as a 108, but seems to be slightly off form from earlier in the year. A return to open stakes may be just what she needs. She’s one who needs to get the lead early and keep it, but with Z. Kentucky in the irons she has a great chance for that. She is on the rail and goes off at 9/2.

In post two is Keys, a 4yo daughter of Came Home. She returned to the turf last time out after a long stint on dirt. This filly has quite a history, having appeared in the Breeder’s Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly, as well as running in the last Equinics, where she ran on dirt and placed second. She is a graded winner on dirt, but had been off form recently, so her connections are hoping that a move back to turf will rejuvenate her. She’s another who wants to run in front, though, and the outcome of this will likely depend on who gets the lead. M. Robinson isn’t Z. Kentucky, but even so, she’s no longshot…she also goes off at 9/2.

In post three is today’s favourite at 2/1, the lovely Brilliancy, a 4yo daughter of Glitterman. She’s gone back and forth from dirt to turf, and is graded placed on both surfaces. She has beaten the likes of Glass Heart and Me Me And More Me, but found Elsinore too much to handle in her last start. She’s hit the board in 5 of 7 starts on turf, though, and has run a 109 on the surface. Probably the best thing going for her here is that she is NOT a frontrunner, she is pretty much a dead closer, and will be gunning for the leaders when they hit the stretch. Mizzi Russell will give her an honest ride.

In post four is Lowlands Lucky at 12/1. She is just a 3yo and is by Mt. Livermore. She ran her first race on dirt and said “well, that’s enough of that” and has been on turf since. She then proceeded to hit the board in five turf sprint stakes as a 2yo. Moved back to the allowance ranks when she turned three, she has improved slowly but surely. She was a game fifth place in the G2 Wilted Petals in her last start, only 2-1/2 lengths back, and has spent her time since then recuperating and getting ready for her 4yo season. With only two routes under her belt and A.P. Indy as damsire, she may want to try stretching out again at some point. She typically runs from somewhere in midpack, which is a good position to be in here. The odds are likely high because she hasn’t broken 100 yet, but if she takes to this yielding course she could be the one in front at the wire.

In post five is the requisite Irishbred, Anna Karenina(Ire). She is a 3yo daughter of Galileo(Ire) and goes off at 21/1. Don’t let her odds fool you, they are inflated because of her recent attempts at routing, which she wasn’t enamored with. She has only missed the board once in 7 turf sprints, and that was in last year’s Equinics, only her third start when she wasn’t ready for that level of racing. She ran second in a turf sprint stakes last time out against older females, and really seems to be hitting her stride. She did break her maiden on a good track, and has a nice midpack style and A. Reed guiding her, so she may just pull an upset.

In post six is Kylie at 9/2, a 5yo daughter of Langfuhr. She was a phenom last year, running over 100 in 9 of 10 starts. She seems to have lost a step as she has aged this season, but still ran second in a G2 three starts back. She’s run as fast as 112, and did run a 110 earlier this year, so she’s got the stuff and if she can find that kind of effort again will be a force to be reckoned with.

In post seven, also at 9/2, is Cainwasntable. She is a striking dark grey daughter of Runaway Groom and is also a 5yo. She was claimed early in her 4yo season off of the infamous *computer trainer, and her new owner kyliette got quite the bargain. She banged out five 100+ speed figures in her next seven races, but it wasn’t until this year that she attempted stakes competition. She became a stakeswinner three starts ago, and appears to still have plenty of life left in her. She also runs best on the lead, although she seems to be able to win head-to-head battles when she puts her mind to it. C. Rice is a decent enough jockey.

Rounding out our field at 10/1 is Real Wood Fan, a 5yo daughter of Woodman. She is the most experienced mare in the field, with 42 career starts to her credit. She’s only run on an off track once, but it was a doozy, in which she blasted a 117 as a 3yo in defeating older females over 7 furlongs. She’s been a 7 to 7-1/2 furlong specialist throughout her career, but has won at 6.5f also. She won her fourth stakes to open this season, and ran second in another two races ago, so she’s still got it when she feels like flaunting it.

Well, despite the parity in the odds, we have quite a mix of running styles and experience levels here. It should be a very interesting race, despite the absence of E C Doyle. Not a single one of these ladies has been on a yielding surface, and they all have ability, so I believe this is really wide open to whoever takes to the surface and gets a good trip. Good luck to all, and whatever the outcome, may they all come home sound.

[2

post-1282","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
