Who Will Get Win Number eight?

Idaho – Four older fillies and mares will meet Saturday in the Judges Chromite Memorial. It will be run over the firm turf course at a distance of nine furlongs and will carry a purse of $45,000. Judge Chromite is a 7 YO mare by Big E.Z. who won 13 of 56 starts. She has one foal to race – a winner.

Firm King (6/5), a dark chestnut 4 YO filly by Desert King, is the slight favorite. I caught up with her trainer Pandrews who assured me that she was only out for a work on Saturday in preparation for DelPen Champion’s Day.

“She didn’t have enough points to get in the Breeder’s Bowl and I didn’t want her sitting quite so long between races, so I found this soft spot for her just to keep her in shape. I don’t want to take too much out of her but I still want her to get something out of it and a race will be better than a public work as she likes the competition,” I was told.

Firm King is ranked # 20 in the Turf Classic division and has won 7/11 starts including her last, The Triangular Hill.

Arc Over Danzig (2/1) will break from post two and is owned by Whirlaway. A large copper chestnut trimmed in white, this 4 YO daughter of Danzig is not much of a lady. She has a big appetite and a big attitude. She has also won seven and is actually dropping back somewhat in class, probably in preparation for a big effort come DPCD. She ran a bang-up second in the Grade I Cedora D three back and should do extremely well her if they are going to let her run.

Punisher will be sending Kill Bill (9/5) from post 3 and the 4 YO daughter of Kurofune is ranked number 19 in the Turf Classic division. She also has won seven and comes into this race off a win last time out in a restricted stakes. She likes this track and it may give her an edge as she finished second here in Idaho, two races back in the Memphis Force at longer. She will be closing fast. I can’t help but wonder if this is a theme name or just comes from a dark sense of humor.

The fourth and final horse in the group is Marita Covarrubias (7/1) who was previously owned by Whirlaway, if my memory serves me right. Now trained by Cpustables, this 6 YO mare by Glitterman is a solid allowance mare and is stepping up only to fill the race.
