On paper, the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf promised to be an exciting race, with three unbeaten colts and a host of others that had lost only once. While the race was still a thriller, the result during the final furlong was never in doubt as rharfo7’s aptly named Always Improving, ridden perfectly by Lawton in a stalking position just behind a four horse battle for the lead, swooped past the front runners and won under a hand ride by 2 ½ lengths. The final time of 1:44 1/5 did not threaten the stakes record, but still resulted in a more-than respectable 88 SF. “What a thrill!” Lawton exclaimed on the backstretch. “He is such a treat to ride, just a push-button horse. It’s hard to realize that he is only a juvenile!”
The real battle was for second, as Very Silver steadily closed on his nemesis, the unbeaten Pub Crawl, to nip that rival for the place in the final strides, finishing 1/4 length ahead in a close battle. Beaten, but not outgamed, Pub Crawl battled on gallantly to the wire. Of the four front runners, the others finished fifth, tenth and eleventh. Another previously unbeaten colt, Andy’s Choice, came flying from nowhere, where he had been lagging in last, to make up a ton of ground late for fourth. Keep an eye on this guy next year, as the distances get longer. The pacesetting Tiderunner held on for fifth, and while he was visibly tiring, he was only 3 ½ lengths behind the winner at the wire, and just a quarter length behind Andy.
Winner of half of his eight lifetime starts, the rich Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf score pushed the Trempolino colt’s earnings to almost $700,000, and he is now ranked second in the classic turf colt division, and has to merit serious consideration for Eclipse honors.
