The race honors the unfortunately named What a Crock was by no means a crock on the racetrack, winning the 6 ½ furlong Preponderant Handicap (114 SF) at age four, and was a pretty useful dirt allowance sprinter in a career that spanned 32 starts and 7 victories. Retired to stud, the son of Green Desert x Nashwan has produced a talented turf miler in Get You Scurry On, a stakes-winning three year old colt by Zabeel.
Each of the colts in this race is looking for his first stakes victory. Co-favoritism goes to leo3’s Barb’s Liesure and super23’s Tessio. Both trainers are well-known in the DelPenn residency, and have saddled many talented runners this year. While these two have shown some potential in their brief careers, Liesure may have just a bit of an edge, with two wins from three starts, including a field high 87 SF, earned two starts back. That figure was earned here at Delaware Park, when the colt tired at the wire to finish second in the 6 furlong Tolerant Peak Stakes behind the speedy Spaztown. The son of freshman sire Tomahawk out of a Danehill mare, the dark brown colt is a half-brother to the multiple stakes winning Barb’s Helle, who was most effective sprinting on the dirt. The 6 ½ panels is a bit of a question mark, but if anyone can get this colt to relax and rate that extra distance, the great Herbert Ross can. Tessio, a royally-bred son of Forty Niner x Fappiano mare, wasn’t all that enthusiastic about an off-track in his debut, but once he hit a fast track, the chocolate bay responded with an easy win at Saturday’s distance, posting an 81 SF. Last time out, Tessio never got untracked in a 7 furlong stakes. This race will show whether that was a one-off, or simply that he’s not quite ready for this level, in which case, a turf try may be in order.
Next in the betting at 7/2, is Dans Bearing, from the vipertwo barn. The dark red chestnut has a turfy pedigree, by French Derby winner Bering, but like so many times, this guy has shown a better turn of foot on the main track (although it may be a bit quick to judge, as his lone turf race was his debut). Dan reeled off two wins down in Puerto Rico, including a solid allowance win at 6 1/2 furlongs (80 SF), but found either the company or extra distance a bit much in the Grade 1 GSR Diamond last time out. Should rebound quite nicely here. Be Smart T hails from the skyhigh barn, another organization that routinely fields good horses. The son of Macabe (a grandson of Topicount), had his best race last time out, when he tired late in the Dyna From Known Cap (finishing ahead of Tessio; 7 furlongs, 80 SF). The cutback in distance should suit, and the colt fits well in here. Simjunkie3 has Impeached Defense. The son of Impeachment has a very turfy back end to this pedigree, even though his dam was best routing on the dirt, so it may be worth a turf try at some point. That said, the colt had a pretty sharp win going 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt while beating the stakes winning Dead Irish Writers down in South Carolina (82 SF). Was a bit flat in his stakes debut, but he ran unusually rank in that race. Given his normal off-the-pace run, I expect to see better results here. Jromantic6’s Bada has finished off the board only once in a five race career, and that came over an off-track. The son of Scrimshaw looked great last time out, pulling away to easily win a Virginia allowance (84 SF). This should be a thriller of a finish in a pretty evenly matched group.

[2

post-1097","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-previews
["GET
