Icy Mambo, by far, is not an all-star on the race track. She comes out of a respectful breeding line of Kingmambo x Exclusive Native x Icecapade. She’s a winner of three lifetime starts, never appeared in a stakes race and hit a speed over 100 only once in her career.

So what makes her so special? She is the game-dam to Gimlet Neat, this year’s winner of the Bluegrass Derby.

Icy Mambo kicked off her career on November 6, 2004 as a 3-year old and quickly established herself as a front runner as she blazed around the track on the lead before being caught, finishing third with a speed of 91.

Icy would follow that up with a somewhat similar effort three weeks later, this time finishing second and a speed of 101. All indications were promising that this girl had something going for her. A 101 in her second start? Very impressive. But that turned out to be the only time she would achieve this level.

She would finally break her maiden on January 8th, 2005 in Maryland, going a mile at 1-2 odds, and this would turn out to be the lowest odds of her career. She would record a speed of 91 in her effort. In April of the same year, Icy would run a pair of races on the turf where she would be held off the lead. She earned her second career win going 8.5f in the District of Columbia. Both races would be charted at 90, the fastest she would run on the turf.

Her once promising career would go downhill from here. Thirteen more races would follow and she would hit a speed in the 90’s only once. Her last career win came on January 7, 2006. This would be two years and within one day of her first career win. It came in North Dakota and Icy Mambo would hold off two closing horses and post an 85 speed.

She would not reach this speed level again until May 6, 2006 where she finished her career in Michigan, running 9th in a field of 14, with a final career speed of 87. She went off at 26-1 odds, the highest at anytime in her career.

Icy Mambo finished with a record of 3-5-2 in 21 starts and just over $55,000 in earnings. What she did not achieve on the track, she made up for in the breeding barn.

Monkey Mambo was bred the same year she retired and this gal out of Buddha became a stake winner when she won the Kristrical Fools memorial later in 2006 as a two year old. She was not outstanding as she logged a record of 3-4-3 in 32 starts and was retired in 2009.

In 2007 Native Mambo was the next child brought into the world, sired by El Prado. Native Mambo had a wonderful career with 10 wins in 39 starts and $1.9 million in earnings. She is a G1 winner, taking the DPCD VIII Mumtaz Mahal Handicap and is also the mother to G1 Cabsarehere, a male who has won over $2.7 million and is a Breeders’ Bowl winner.

Sili Mambo came in 2008, sired by Dansili and placed in a stakes race. A winner of 2 of 30 starts she is now retired and relegated to breeding in her mother’s footsteps.

Mambo Cubed was born in 2009, sired by Aragorn, and ran poorly. She shifted through a handful of barns, earning $30k in 23 starts with 3 wins. She has been retired and has one offspring.

Using Arch as the sire, Icy Mambo became the mother to Arched Mambo in 2010. A male who won 4 races over 23 starts and $81k in winnings. He was retired and used as a he-mare in 2012, producing Hammer Price who is actively seeking her first win.

2011 brought Big Brown in to sire-up with which kicked out a filly by the name of Deliver the Mambo. Unfortunately, this gal could only deliver one win in 21 starts. She as changed barns through claimers and is still actively racing.

Gimlet Neat, out of Tanino Gimlet, was delivered in 2012 and has caught the eye of the racing world. After winning the Arkansas Juvenile (derby prep) he went in to write his name in the history books by racing on the front end of the Bluegrass Derby, picking up his second consecutive G1 race. To date, he has won 6 of 11 starts and is just shy of $2 million in earnings.

The Flaming Moe has a tough trail to follow with her brother. She is out of the 2013 crop of 2-year olds and sired by Uncle Mo. She’s still looking for her niche on the race track and is currently winless in three starts with $5k collected thus far.

Icy Mambo has had a few of her children turn out to be non-performers, but the ones that have exceeded, have gone well over the call of duty. Expect to see some more top runners out of this girl as well from her children.

[4

post-10667","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general
["GET
