With the possible exception of AP Indy, Tanino Gimlet may be the most powerful sire in the history of derbyfever.com.

Selurvinek’s GIMLET NEAT ($30.90) blitzed the field, leading from wire-to-wire in a tour de force that was run in exact opposite fashion of the real-life Kentucky Derby.

While Palace Malice went out to impossibly fast fractions and was always coming back, Gimlet Neat never was going to be caught.

Congratulations to Selurvinek! Good thing you decided earlier this year that you’d like to have a Derby runner.

GIMLET NEAT: Away very quickly and then fast in the early going to establish a clear lead that grew to almost three lengths. Setting fractions of 23 flat, 46 1/5 and 1:10 flat, he left the rest the field flat on their feet. Had enough left in the tank to hold off a late challenge from El Querrequerre.

EL QUERREQUERRE: Away alertly in third behind Papa Joe, went by that one after five furlongs and took up the chase of the winner. Try as he might, he just could not get to Gimlet Neat. Still, Otto Haack’s little green bird was much better than any other horse in the Derby. He was more than three lengths clear of the third-place runner.

EVIL SUNRISE: Away decently in good order, got the rail to himself and saved ground around the first turn. Began advancing up the backstretch while keeping his spot on the inside all the way around. Up to third at the head of the lane but no menace to the top two. Still an impressive spring for Lenny’s colt.

RIVER JACK CB: Despite showing poor form coming into the Derby as the only horse in the field without a triple-digit speed figure, Bizall’s colt came running late to get up for fourth. Looks like bright days ahead for this son of the wonderful mare, River Nicole.

RAM N RAID: Away decently in good order, raced around the first turn in the four path. Dropped down to the two path down the backstretch, but got passed by Evil Sunrise on the inside. Moved out into the three path on the turn for home to draw even with Evil Sunrise, but got outrun by that one in the stretch. Trotter, who predicted longshot Golden Soul would hit the board in the real-life Derby, told trainer Houseriot in chat on Sunday morning that he thinks Ram N Raid will appreciate the distance of the Middle Jewel. Houseriot reports that Ram N Raid came out of the Derby a little groggy.

WAY TOO COOL: Away in good order but outrun to the first turn by the other fast ones, got caught wide going around the first turn. Continued outside horses down the backstretch, and lost ground again turning for home. Ran hard the whole way but the tough trip showed in the homestretch. My apologies to Gowans for making his colt my pick in the Derby. That’s a lot of weight for any horse to carry.

THE COOLEST: Fairly respectable run for a horse to finish seventh while stretching out a full quarter mile. Did not threaten to hit the board, but still became the best finish by a Given horse in the Derby to date. Perhaps a sign of things to come? Tune in for the Middle Jewel when the Fire and Blood Stables’ first-stringer hits the track. Wiseguys already are touting Karukaza.

RECONDITE CADET: Away slowly way down on the inside, saved ground while far back around the first turn. Jockey L. Snyder tried to do his best impression of Calvin Bo-Rail but this year’s Derby was no race for the late runners. Not quite the race he was hoping for, but congrats to Cadet anyway on making his first Bluegrass Derby.

YOU AND TEQUILA: Disappointing run for one of the top picks coming into the Bluegrass Derby. Away slowly in 18th, picked up way more positions than lengths by the time they got home. Ninth, beaten 10 lengths with only a 97 speed figure is far from what Texasace was hoping for coming into the race.

HUNTING BLIND: It was just not meant to be for the darling of the chat room, Bammie. Try as everyone might to root home her Colonel John colt, there wasn’t much Hunting Blind could do when he broke 17th in a race that was dominated by frontrunners.

PAPA JOE: Away alertly, outbroken by only Gimlet Neat. Chased the eventual winner from second position for the first five furlongs of the Derby. Day was done when El Querrequerre went by at that point. I guess Master Matty will have to settle for his second-place finish in the 2000 Guineas with Sun Dynasty. Congratulations on that one, mate, and better luck next race with Papa Joe.

PRESPECTOR: Away in good order in fourth on the far outside, got caught way, way wide going around that first turn. Found himself in real trouble early on when passed by Way Too Cool, and retreated from there. Like MasterM, Balata will have to settle for tremendous accomplishments in other forms of competition. Rick shot 65 the other day. I shoot 65 all the time, too, but then I crack open a beer and play the last five or six holes.

SIMBESTO: Alas, no rabbit came out of the hat for this Sim magician of a horse. Away slowly in 16th, found himself mired far back with the rest of the hard-luck closers. While Orb found a perfect trip far back of a fast early pace in the Kentucky Derby, the back was no place to be in the Bluegrass Derby. Better luck next time Mano, and I am sure those grandkids had a good time at your house, anyway.

HAACK’S DUKE: Had a chance to find a decent trip while breaking midpack and not losing much ground around the first turn, but the other Haack horse was the one racing for victory in the Bluegrass.

GONNA BE TROUBLE: Disappointing day for the Blazing Saddles contingent. While Gowans’ Way Too Cool could not overcome a tough trip, MTK’s colt broke slowly and also lost a ton of ground around the first turn. Better days ahead for the sharp trainers at that rez.

SWAGU: Second-place finisher in the Wooden Indian with a 104 speed figure, could manage only a measly 89 in the Derby. He hasn’t run that slow on the dirt since May of his juvenile season. Reman was overjoyed to make his first Derby but was hoping for more than this.

CANDY PEGASUS: Tough day for the entry from Texas. While You and Tequila was a disappointing ninth, Candy Peg broke dead last behind a logjam of closers who were not going anywhere.

JUST GOOD ENOUGH: Starting to think that shorter races are going to suit Nextbonus Bill’s talented son of Corinthian. This colt regressed while stretched to nine furlongs, then bombed completely at 10. The Bulls did beat the Nets in Game 7, though, so not all was lost on Saturday in Chicago.

TEARS OF FIRE: The good news for the Super Stables is that they made it to the Derby for the eighth year in a row. The bad news is their horse ran 19th. The good news is Dr. Tony cashed a big bet on Orb in the Kentucky Derby.

LEFT SIDE STRONG: Much to Dundey’s dismay, he could not locate jockey P. Haynes as late as 10 minutes before post time. Finally, he found him in the infield, doing keg stands with sorority girls. Trying to impress his new friends, he tried to ride the Derby upside down as well.

[4

post-10666","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general
["GET
