Raced in company with that one throughout, never relinquishing his position and accelerating past the leaders for a powerful victory, drawing away by almost two lengths at the end. In the eyes of the other 13 trainers, an act of pure evil.

SMARTNESS WANTED: Improving dramatically off his disappointing 10th-place finish in the Vermont Is 4 Lovers, Smartness Wanted prompted the winner all the way. He raced in the second group early, just off the shoulder of Evil Sunrise. Try as he might, he never could get eye-to-eye with the winner but earned a solid second place.

BOLTIE: Broke alertly on even terms for the lead with General Jamison. Outraced that one and took over a two-length lead just past the halfway point. Had no answer when the top two went by, but held on for a respectable third.

KING ALONSO: Away slowly down on the rail, raced in ninth place early. Fell back by almost seven lengths before commencing his run. Closed at about the same rate as the top two but could not make up ground on that pair. Did finish more than six lengths clear of the fifth-place runner.

ELITE SENSE: Away a step slow in seventh, found himself in a nice open spot on the rail going up the backstretch. Failed to capitalize on a potentially friendly trip and knew he was beat when King Alonso went by just past the halfway point. Was losing ground at the end and finished a long way back of the fourth-place horse.

GENERAL JAMISON: Away alertly to race in front in the early stages, pressed for the lead by the eventual third-place runner Boltie. Was outdueld by that one and faded back to sixth.

MARQUEE SIGN: Broke slowly in ninth. Caught a tough trip while outside a wall of horses going around the first turn. The lost ground may have cost him as he never was able to make a move. Looks like Desperado Rob will have to focus on the Oaks this year as this leaves him fresh out of Derby contenders. Oh, and the Braves are looking good in spring training.

BLACK SEA STAR: Away slowly back in ninth, had a perfect view of the top two just outside that top pair in the early. Watched those two race away from him and had no answer.

RED HARVEST: Broke in a tangle and raced in the back early. Then, raced in the back late. Did not die.

SINGIN DRAGON TED: Away alertly to race in a favorable position third behind the dueling leaders. Failed to capitalize on a potential “garden-spot” trip and began his retreat at about the halfway point. Still a heck of a horse for his obscure sire.

PLATTSBURGH: Just walked out of there to break last of all from his far outside post. Fell far back. Tried very brieflly to pick up his feet at the head of the lane but quickly abandoned that idea and retreated all the way.

FUJI FUN: Bumped by Red Harvest out of the gate, fell behind early and never made up any ground.

LEFT SIDE STRONG: Tough break for Dundey as his juvenile champion has fallen apart as a 3yo. Followed up two poor allowance runs with an unmitigated disaster in the Land’s End. Better days ahead for Dundey as it must be hard to take to watch his champion struggle like this.

THINGAMAJIGGER. Poor decision by the jockey to accept a gift of a full keg of beer by the gate crew. The added 80 pounds or so must have been too much for him.

[4

post-10598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general
["GET
