UTBC Light Well is the favorite, but by no means has this million-dollar mile locked up. The stakes record, set just last year by Cyrus De Virus, is 1:35 2/5 (102.644SP). None of the entrants have exceeded that mark yet, but several have come darn close, and we might just see the record broken today.

Qualifying first for the race, and breaking from post 1, is Alemara. Adschus02‘s Sea The Stars colt is 2-for-6, with a grade 2 win at two back in the Champagne Mile. He comes into today’s event with a solid fast-closing second in the grade 2 Royal Dodge also at a mile. No question about his distance capability. Lots to love about this colt here, and he has top jockey F Gossett up. Bettors may view the 9-1 odds as a gift.

Breaking from post 2 is the Tapit colt Tap Like Mad. Megablaze’s charge started his career on the main track with solid if unremarkable results, but switched to the grass two back and found he really really liked it. An allowance win led to a wire-to-wire win in the grade 3 Fall Stakes, which was enough to earn Tap Like Mad entry into this race. Both of his turf starts are at a mile, and he’s placed at a mile on dirt, so absolutely no question he handles distance with ease. Seems to handle class jumps handily as well, and the connections are past masters at preparing horses for big days. Also 9-1, and runs under the guidance of L Israel.

Megablaze, via the Megablaze2 barn, also runs the third horse, Hypotanoose. The Johannesburg colt is 13-1, though arguably has a better record than his stablemate. After 5 starts, he has 4 wins with his only error in the grade 2 Coventry. Few would find fault with the colt’s third place effort however. His speed figures are a touch slower than many in this field, and he has yet to route. In his favor, his last start in the grade 2 Nationwide saw a lifetime high speed figure when adding distance.

Kroth4’s (aka Selurnivek) Hot And Wild runs out of post 4. Like Tap Like Mad, Hot And Wild started on the main track, but the trainer realized pretty quickly dirt was not the Unusual Heat colt’s preferred surface. In his third lifetime start, Hot And Wild went for the grass and reeled off the first of four wins from five turf tries. This colt prepped in an allowance, unusual for most of these runners, but given he had two graded wins and a place behind him, he had no need for additional points to secure a place in the field. Top speed figure at a mile is definitely a good sign. 13-1 odds.

Bothnotice, breaking from post 5, runs for trainer Deeprock98. A son of Girolamo, the colt is the most experienced in the field with 10 starts on his resume. He’s got 2 wins behind him, a 5-furlong maiden and the grade 3 M.L. Trophy at 6 furlongs. Despite all the rung experience, the colt has yet to run longer 6.5 furlongs. On pedigree there’s definite support for handing the mile. The trainer has been having a bang-up year with juveniles, and taking this race would be an oh-so-sweet cap to an already banner campaign.

It’s the year of uncoupled entries, with Selurnivek’s Kroth3 stable also running Swag Daddy. The Scat Daddy colt enters off a solid second in the grade 2 Knick Knack Juvenile where he was just about 3 lengths out of the win at a mile. it was an improving speed figure after a win in a listed stake at 7 panels. Like many of his peers, he had previously found moderate capability on dirt, but a home on the turf. Selurnivek has two solid candidates in his duo. 13-1 odds.

It’s apparently also the year for Scat Daddy to turn out a good turf crop, as the 7 horse is his son. Scatter The Seed, bred and trained by Stickup (aka Roys) won his debut by two, went straight for listed company and won again, then skipped a few levels in favor of the big time. The big time of course was the grade 1 More Nay. Scatter the Seed won by a slim head, but put up a strong 88 speed figure. After three straight sprints, it was time to try two turns, and the grade 2 Royal Dodge was the place to do it. Scatter only managed fifth, but earned a respectable and improving speed figure. Tough horse that handles large crowds and big challenges with ease. Has the talented R Mansur aboard for the ride. 11-1 odds.

Elite Dimaggio will carry saddlecloth 8 for trainer Eliteracng (aka Fleetwood). The Rock of Gibraltar colt posted a huge 97 speed figure to take home top honors in the grade 2 Royal Dodge last out, clearly relishing the distance. He also has a maiden 6-furlong victory behind him, plus a third in the grade 1 More Nay. The Royal Dodge was significantly different from his other starts, so one has to wonder if he will repeat that performance here, or relapse. For his connections sake, root for a repeat. 9-1 odds.

Guinness Road, bred by the brilliant Jetman and trained by Squirrel, starts from post 9. The Galileo colt won a residency allowance and listed stake before finishing third in the grade Salisbury Medallion. An injury kept the colt sidelined until the G2 Bedford, but Guinness Road returned from the long layoff better than ever to win by nearly two lengths for a 95 speed figure. It was nearly a 20-point jump over is prior high, so like Elite Dimaggio, one must question if it was a fluke or a serious sign of maturity. A Rolling has the ride at 13-1.

Tazbred (aka Tazdevil) trains Sushi Sushi, who starts at 7-1 from post 10. The Redoute’s Choice colt has 3 wins from 5 starts to his credit. All starts are grass sprints, and include the grade 1 Curragh (Equinics). The colt has an impeccable pedigree – he’s a scratchbred with Kingmambo x Seattle Slew on the backend. Definite questions about ability to handle distance, but absolutely none about class. This horse is fast, if he can carry his speed over an extra couple furlongs, should do just fine.

Field favorite at 6-1 is UTBC Light Well. As other writers have noted, one advantage to covering these races is locating mares one has breeding rights to in order to bring future kids back home. Wilkes, this colt’s mama is mine all mine next year <grin> . UTBC Light Bell is a son of North Light, and just pulled off a sweet victory in the grade 1 Golden Shoe. He’s got 5 wins from 7, and over $2million in the bank. The Medaglia D’Oro colt picked up a great wire-to-wire win in the grade 3 Wooden Reserve a month ago. It was an 8.5furlong race, a fabulous prep to drop back to a mile here. The 96-speed figure he earned was none too shabby either. Four starts for 2 wins and 2 places? This is one colt any simmer would be proud to call his. 10-1 odds.

Begin The Be Green starts in lucky post 13 for Mycaza (aka Smokeglack). The Special Week colt is 13/1 off the strength of wins in a residency maiden win and a victory in the grade two Norfellow. He has yet to run a route, and that presets some concerns for his supporters. His pedigree suggests distance is will within grasp, however with this babies getting a mile in before the big day is always a good thing.
