While Jailitis was winning the Grade 2 Derby Stud Trail across the pond in Ireland this weekend on the turf, another Monsun three year old, Whentheshipcomesin, took down the 9-furlong Grade 2 Captain Hook Stakes on the dirt course in New York.

Jailitis had never popped a 100 speed figure in his career before this past weekend, and he was coming off a pretty disappointing start in the 10-furlong Grade 1 Japanese 2000 Guineas two starts ago–his only finish out of the top three in nine career starts so far. Jailitis upped his career earnings to a little over $256,000 with his fourth win on Saturday.

But he was coming into that Japanese 2000 Guineas race after a really decent effort in the 10-furlong Grade 3 Manatee Classic, and Jailitis showed Saturday what a difference a little maturity can make when he scored his first graded win ever. This colt looked extremely professional in this win this weekend.

Not only did Jailitis put on a pretty convincing show for the crowd, but he demolished the old stakes record of 2:02 set by Blast Offf in last year’s Grade 2 Derby Stud Trail. Jailitis ran the ten furlongs in a blistering 2:00 4/5, shaving over a full second off the stakes record set by the Aussie-bred Blast Offf, who ran a 103 speed figure while winning this race last year in Ireland.

Remember, Blast Offf is the colt who had just gotten nosed out in the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf in his two year old season six months before his win here in Ireland last year, so to be mentioned in the same breath as that one and break his stakes record in the process is no small feat for this son of Monsun.

The three-year-old colt who is owned by Jake Stables put himself into the top 30 in his route and classic turf divisions for his age group, and now all his owner has to figure out is where to send him next.

It ended up being pretty much a two-horse race between Jailitis and Master Of Mayhem this weekend in Ireland.

With the 7/1 long-shot Irish-bred Cadet Stars leading the first two calls and setting some fairly quick fractions, Jailitis and Master Of Mayhem were tracking him closely early on.

About halfway through the race, Master Of Mayhem made his move and snatched the lead from the fading Cadet Stars, and he was quickly joined by Jailitis.

By the six furlong marker, Master of Mayhem had the lead, and he was smoking it up on the front end with a 1:10.34 clocking at that point in the race. Master Of Mayhem, who was the second longest shot in the race at 5-1, still had the lead at the mile marker, when the tote board flashed 1:34.30. But Jailitis was starting to make his winning move.

By the time the horses got to within a furlong of the wire, Jailitis and Master Of Mayhem were duking it out, and the rest of the field was some 12 lengths behind those two.

Jailities drew off in the final furlong, tossing a 110 speed figure while winning the ten-furlong event in a time of 2:00 4/5.

Master of Mayhem was right behind him, but he couldn’t quite keep up. It was still a pretty decent effort for the three-year-old New Zealand-bred son of Master Craftsman owned by Mtk and his Shamrock Stables operation. Master of Mayhem had never thrown a 100 speed figure before in his brief career, and he was also attempting his first graded stakes try.

Master Of Mayhem popped a 108 speed figure this weekend in the Derby Stud Trail, about a dozen points higher than anything he had ever thrown in his previous seven starts. It was a pretty amazing effort by Master Of Mayhem, whose 108 speed figure put him as the second fastest horse ever in the four runnings of this race, despite his second place finish this weekend. That second place finish vaulted him into the #51 spot in the world for his age group in the colts turf route division.

The third-place finisher, Chance It Again, was 17 ½ lengths back, when Jailitis hit the wire in the Derby Stud Trail. Mikethepostman finished fourth, followed by Aurresku and Cadet Stars.

Jailitis, who was sent off as the post-time favorite, paid $6.90, $4.10 and $2.40 to his backers, and the 5-6 exacta with Master Of Mayhem paid $31.00, while the 5-6-1 trifecta with Chance It Again third paid $80.20.

[3

post-10201","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-reviews
["GET
