Call of the Wild II is the morning line favorite and deservedly so. He has done little wrong this year with three grade I wins including the Sand Castle Classic. Call of the Wild II came off a layoff and ran a huge race winning the CA Classic by nearly four lengths against a top notch field. He dropped back in distance and bounced a little last time out but still ran third. This will be his third race off the layoff, he got the bounce out of the way and seems set for a top effort. That still may not be good enough here.

The three year old of the moment is 17/1 Fly for Buda. Those odds are in large part because of his last race but really are a joke. He should be about 6/1 here. You have to love the prep for this race. Three weeks ago in a restricted stakes race on the turf at a longer distance and he won comfortably by four lengths. From a handicapping point of view you have two strong angles, turf to dirt and cutting back in distance. It is a very interesting and different approach.

There are several older runners they have a real chance. Year of the Vote has had a good year but did he peak too soon with that huge race last time out? Silver Canuck has been hanging around the top runners here all year long. Wonderboy Cougar (IRE) has very good speed and has been real consistent this year.

A couple of three year olds look just as good as their older counterparts. New Yorker and Travers winner Macho Niner has been very good of late. Eddie Haskell winner Squal Me Halo has really developed over the summer.

The wild card here could be Anticosti. Is he a ten furlong horse? Sounds odd I mean he did win the Bluegrass Derby after all. In the Princess Cup he ran off a layoff and on an off track so you can over look that race. The LA Derby seemed to be set up for him racing on three weeks rest, over a fast track but he finished third. If he is indeed a ten furlong horse it would be no real surprise to see him put the rough summer behind him with a win here.

Race: 2657.0414 Breeders Bowl Turf – Grade I – $2,000,000
Track: New York
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one half on the Turf

We will have the pleasure of seeing quite possibly three or four of the top sim long turf horses ever and they will all be racing against each other. I’m not sure there has ever been a field with this many grade I wins collectively. Allied Assault, Sunnybank Memorial, Rain God, and Horseshoe Bay are the four major players. In fact it will be a colossal upset if another runner in this field beats out these four for the win.

Allied Assault is the slight favorite on the morning line. He will be coming into the race off a layoff. That might be a concern on one hand. Usually runners off a layoff have less early speed than they normally would. Allied Assault has very little early speed anyway but you don’t want to fall too far behind. On the other hand the old man is fresh, fresh, fresh. His late kick could be extra spicy this week.

Sunnybank Memorial is riding a three race winning streak into the Breeder’s Bowl. The last time he lost it was to Rain God. Sunnybank has been doing a good job of not letting the pace get too far away from him. He should be well positioned in the race, just far enough ahead of the deep closers and not too far off the pace. That could be the key to defending his title.

Rain God is on a four race win streak. He has worked his stalking or front running ability to perfection. He has beaten Sunnybank Memorial on a couple of occasions and really holds a slight advantage because of his speed over his three main rivals. This race though has a couple of solid pace horses so Rain God will have to be careful not to get caught up in a quick pace.

Horseshoe Bay suffered his first defeat of the summer last time out. He did not fire at all and was further off the early pace than usual in his first try against older runners. He has been cycling down in his last few races and sometimes it is tough to go with a runner coming in off such a poor performance. You have to say though he has hit the bottom. There is only one way to go from here and that is up. She has had a couple of ups and downs since last year’s Breeder’s Bowl win. Meguire has done a good job getting her to this point. Her race two back was what she will need to hold off the younger fillies here and even that may not be good enough. One win in the last six months is not exactly a positive however she has been close in all her races.

Glass Heart is another older filly but she is on fire. Swift Kick is the Bluegrass Oaks winner and has won two in a row. Swift Kick is every bit as fast as her older counterparts and looks to be sitting on a big race. Empire Reef won the Black Middle Flower and has proved to be one tough pace setter. She may not make the pace here but if she does look out she is very capable of wiring this field.

Race: 2657.0412 Breeders Bowl Turf Distaff – Grade I – $1,000,000
Track: New York
Restrictions: Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and three eighths on the Turf

This is a very deep field of fillies and mares. A Gold City is the favorite here and she looks every bit the part. She is a strong front runner that has been very tough to run down. Krishna (IRE) ran a very good race last time out against the boys finishing second. She has been on a roll this year.

The three year olds have their work cut out for them. Devil’s Slide had strung together four straight wins before finishing second last time out in the Flower Pot Stakes. In fact Devil’s Slide has never been worse than second on turf. The distance could be a slight concern for her but until she shows she can not get the distance you can’t count her out.

The other top three year old is La Pata Daisy. She broke her maiden in her first start at three and has not looked back. She won five graded stakes in a row at one point four of those grade I races. Her speed figures have been slower than the others she faces here but she has also raced at longer distances. She should be capable of posing a serious threat to this field.

Race: 2657.0411 Breeders Bowl Sprint – Grade I – $1,000,000
Track: New York
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: Six furlongs on the Dirt

This race is a pick em with just about all fourteen runners seeming capable of the win. I think speed and experience at the distance will be important. Casterly Rock (IRE) is some what of a long shot here but he looks great. He has won three of his last four and shows a very good deal of speed. He will likely be stalking the pace but will not be far off and looks as good as any of his older counterparts.

One in a Million II is the favorite and has a bunch of speed. The thing I don’t like is that he has just one race at this distance and it was a fifth place finish. He seems like a seven furlong specialist. He is speedy and in good form so I would not totally throw him out. Navy Man strung together three very impressive grade I wins in a row over the summer. He is another that might find the distance difficult. He comes from off the pace and has done better at seven furlongs.

King of the Slews has run three hug races in a row and come up short each time. Those speed figures though will make him a factor here. Empire of the Sun is fresh off a grade I win at the distance. He has good speed and must be respected.

Race: 2657.0410 Breeders Bowl Mile – Grade I – $1,000,000
Track: New York
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: One mile on the Turf

Xtremely a Fan has shown he loves a mile. The pace here could be so hot the closers do not stand a chance.

Race: 2657.0406 Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly – Grade I – $750,000
Track: New York
Restrictions: Fillies and mares, 2 years old
Distance: A mile and one sixteenth on the Turf

Super Gold is a perfect five for five. She has been very speedy in all her starts but last time out showed she did not have to have the lead right from the gate. She could be one tough filly to beat. Nob Hill has been pretty good winning three races in a row. She comes from just off the pace and has been improving in each of her turf starts.

Torch Song really improved last time out in her first route race. She went to the front and opened up a large lead on the field. She was strong all the way to the wire and will pose a threat to Super Gold.

[4

post-1016","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general
["GET
